The Parent’s Leave & Benefit Bill was implemented by the Government to help parents spend more quality time with their children.

The Bill entitles parents to take two extra weeks paid parents leave for any child born/adopted on or after November 1st 2019. This is in addition to the 26 weeks maternity leave and 2 weeks paternity leave currently available to employees. It is available for both parents, but the entitlement leave cannot be transferred from one parent to another. The leave must be used before the child’s first birthday. The leave can be taken as a continuous period of two weeks or in separate one week blocks.

The Bill does not require employers to pay employees while they are on parent’s leave. Employees will be able to claim the benefit from The Department of Employment Affairs & Social Protection .

Employers are allowed postpone the parent’s leave in situations where taking the leave would have a substantial adverse effect on the operation of the employer’s business, but the employer cannot postpone it for more than 12 weeks.
